Enhancement of electrical conductivity to metallization of Mn$$_{3-x}$$Fe$$_x$$O$$_4$$ spinel and postspinel with elevating pressure

High-pressure neutron diffraction proved that MnFe$$_2$$O$$_4$$ and Mn$$_2$$FeO$$_4$$ spinels transform into CaMn$$_2$$O$$_4$$-type structure above 18 GPa and 14 GPa, respectively. The transition pressure of Mn$$_{3-x}$$Fe$$_x$$O$$_4$$ solutions decreases with increasing Mn content. Synchrotron X-ray M$"{o}$ssbauer experiments revealed that Fe$$^{2+}$$ and Fe$$^{3+}$$ distribution at the tetrahedral (A) and octahedral (B) sites in the spinel structure changes with pressure. MnFe$$_2$$O$$_4$$ and Mn$$_2$$FeO$$_4$$ spinels are ferrimagnetic and the CaMn$$_2$$O$$_4$$-type phase is paramagnetic. The temperature dependence of resistivity indicates that both spinels are semiconductors wherein electrons hop between cations at the A and B sites. A pressure-induced shortening of B-B distance promoted conduction via greater electron mobility between adjacent B cations. The Fe$$^{2+}$$ and Fe$$^{3+}$$ occupancies at the B sites in MnFe$$_2$$O$$_4$$ are much larger than those in Mn$$_2$$FeO$$_4$$. The CaMn$$_2$$O$$_4$$-type phase is metallic. Theoretical calculation confirmed the metallic character and Fe d-orbitals strongly renormalized compared to Mn d-orbitals.

HCM12A Cr-rich oxide layer investigation using 3D atom probe

Three-dimensional atom probe techniques were applied to the investigation on the oxide scale in 12Cr ferritic-martensitic steel, HCM12A. A duplex oxide scale was formed in lead bismuth eutectic at 450-500$$^{circ}$$C, during 5500 h. Samples were located 500-700 nm away from the boundary between magnetite and Fe-Cr spinel layers, while the total oxide layer thickness is 18 $$mu$$m. It detected super enrichment of Cr with a size of ten nm roughly, as well as depletion of Fe and enrichment of O at the same site. Surrounding the Cr super enrichment area, enrichment of Si was newly noticed due to the scanned profile of detected atom counts. It is also confirmed that Pb and Bi concentration in the observed spinel region is almost null or less than 0.01 atomic percent, which is possible detecting lowest limit.

Microstructure and atomic disordering of magnesium aluminate spinel irradiated with swift heavy ions

We have investigated the microstructure change and atomic disordering process in magnesium aluminate spinel, MgO ${it n}$Al$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$ with ${it n}$=1.1 and 2.4, irradiated with swift heavy ions of 200-MeV Xe$$^{14+}$$ and 350-MeV Au$$^{28+}$$. Transmission electron microscopy techniques of bright-field (BF) and high-resolution (HR) imaging, as well as high angular resolution electron channeling X-ray spectroscopy (HARECXS) are employed in quantitative analysis of irradiation-induced structural change. Ion tracks show columnar dark contrast of 4-7 nm in diameter at the incident surface in BF images. Strong strain contrast often arises among plural ion tracks formed closely. Clear lattice fringes are observed in HR images even inside the ion tracks. It indicates that the spinel crystals are not amorphized but partially disordered along the ion tracks. Quantitative HARECXS analysis shows that cation disordering progresses with ion fluence. It is revealed that the disordered regions are extended over 12$$pm$$2 nm in diameter along the ion tracks.
