The transition pressure of MnFeO solutions decreases with increasing Mn content. Synchrotron X-ray Mssbauer experiments revealed that Fe and Fe distribution at the tetrahedral (A) and octahedral (B) sites in the spinel structure changes with pressure. MnFeO and MnFeO spinels are ferrimagnetic and the CaMnO-type phase is paramagnetic. The temperature dependence of resistivity indicates that both spinels are semiconductors wherein electrons hop between cations at the A and B sites. A pressure-induced shortening of B-B distance promoted conduction via greater electron mobility between adjacent B cations. The Fe and Fe occupancies at the B sites in MnFeO are much larger than those in MnFeO. The CaMnO-type phase is metallic. Theoretical calculation confirmed the metallic character and Fe d-orbitals strongly renormalized compared to Mn d-orbitals.

A duplex oxide scale was formed in lead bismuth eutectic at 450-500C, during 5500 h. Samples were located 500-700 nm away from the boundary between magnetite and Fe-Cr spinel layers, while the total oxide layer thickness is 18 m. It detected super enrichment of Cr with a size of ten nm roughly, as well as depletion of Fe and enrichment of O at the same site. Surrounding the Cr super enrichment area, enrichment of Si was newly noticed due to the scanned profile of detected atom counts. It is also confirmed that Pb and Bi concentration in the observed spinel region is almost null or less than 0.01 atomic percent, which is possible detecting lowest limit.

Transmission electron microscopy techniques of bright-field (BF) and high-resolution (HR) imaging, as well as high angular resolution electron channeling X-ray spectroscopy (HARECXS) are employed in quantitative analysis of irradiation-induced structural change. Ion tracks show columnar dark contrast of 4-7 nm in diameter at the incident surface in BF images. Strong strain contrast often arises among plural ion tracks formed closely. Clear lattice fringes are observed in HR images even inside the ion tracks. It indicates that the spinel crystals are not amorphized but partially disordered along the ion tracks. Quantitative HARECXS analysis shows that cation disordering progresses with ion fluence. It is revealed that the disordered regions are extended over 122 nm in diameter along the ion tracks.
